The film we watched in class was United 93. The film managed to create and maintain suspense througout, keeping it's audience's on the edge of their seats.
The film began with a deep male voice speaking in a foriegn language accompanied by slow airy music. This built suspense as we, as the audience couldn't understand what he was saying and the music sounded sinister giving a sense of uncertainty. Additionally, the voices heard were not accompanied by faces which meant that the suspense already created was heightend as we could not identify who the voice belonged to.
A sense of normality is establised in the airport. People on the phones, talking and laughing with eachother all indicate that nothing out of the ordinary was going to happen, however the use of close ups on the terrorists faces suggest that they were feeling uneasy and impatient, implying that they were up to something. The terrorists are also praying. Normally, this would suggest that they were pure, spiritual, peaceful people, but the accompanied music tells the audience otherwise.
These scene creates suspense mainly through the use of music as the shots are all of normal things in life.
Before the plane takes off a close up of the plane door is shot, creating suspense and tension as the amplified sound detail of the door locking, close up and long length focus suggest that no one is getting out.
When the flight has finally taken off ther is suspicion of other planes being hi jacked in the air control stations. This creates suspense as we cannot see what is actually happening on the other planes and therfore uncertainty is established as we are unsure wether or not the planes have been hi jacked. Suspense is also built in this scene as the workers react very casually to the scenerio and don't seem to believe that the other planes have been hi jacked. This builds tension as the workers are not doing anything about the situation and they have no sense of urgency even though there is a possibility of peoples lives being at risk.
When we see the planes crash into the Twin Towers, suspense is heigtened rapidly as we are not certain if the plane was United 93.
Finally, towards the end of the film when we are certain something dreadful is about to happen suspense and tension are at their highest. All of the action engages the audience as they are eager to find out what is goin to happen next. A rush of excitment also takes place when we see that the passengers are being successful with their plan to take over the plane, however this is sharply cut when the screen blacks out suggesting the plane had crashed and the plan had failed.
Altough some may say that this film is dragged out and is longer than it it needed to be, in my view i think that United93 is a very detailed account of the actual event. It also keeps it's audience on the edge of their seats by blatently suggesting what is going to happen, but not giving any clues as to when.
This is excellent. Solid detailed analysis which shows an awareness of how the plot of the film is reinforced through the different technical elements. Good work.
