How is supense created in unit 93?

A number of factors contribute to the build up of suspense in unit 93. Initially the film begins with a diagetic sound of a voice over of a foreign language which sounds like some form of a prayer being recited. This is merged with the sound of a heavy droned non diagetic sound which contributes to establishing quite a sinister and sombre mood. Thus putting the viewer on edge and creating suspense as we are aware something bad is going to happen. Prior to boarding the plane everyone is smiling and happy in order to establish a sense of normality this arouses suspense as the audience are waiting for that key moment of disruption to occur. However whilst everybodyelse is cheery the terrorists in question appear on edge and thus creating an unerving atmosphere.

Whilst on the flight a close up of the locking of the door takes place, serving as an important moment as it signifys its importance by emphasing the fact that there is no escape. Furthermore none of the passengers seem interested in the safety instructions being given as nobody suspects that they will need to use them which is ironic as a planned attack was being slowly put into motion.

Panic slowly arises as the authorites realise that the flight is unable to be copied, inidcating some form of technological failure. This creates suspense as it is the moment of disruption that we'd been slowly waiting for. Up untill this point a fairly normal atmosphere had been created however now it appeared obvious that the passengers could be in great danger. Additionnaly the authorities are than made aware of a possible highjacking situation due to suspcious transmission and this in turn creates panic across all boards. This creates suspense as the audience become more aware that the highjacking is going to take place. This made me feel slightly sad in a way and really made me wonder to what extent the circumstances could have been reversed.

This panic is folllowed by a long delay which put the terrorists on edge creating suspense as the passengers are still unaware of whats going on and that their lives are in grave danger.

By the use of mise en scene by using a tape player it creates suspense as it is rewinded we are able to tell that more then one plane is going to be highjacked, this evoked sad emotions and made me feel quite dismal as it made me reflect on how many people lost their lives.

Before the terrorists attempt to highjack the plane one of them says a prayer which makes us realise that they are ready to make their move.

When the terrorists take over the plane and the passengers fight with them to try and regain control it creates suspense as for a moment the audience wonder if the situation is going to be reversed. However when the plane hit the ground reality sank in and a sombre mood rushed through me.

I was inspired by this film as I felt that the recall of events was very accurate and the way that the plot was devised allowed for the build up of suspense to take place by slowly drawing the audience in opposed to feeding it to us all at once.

  1. Really good work (and excellent use of the blog so far). Your analysis shows engages with the film's narrative and meaning in a thoughtful way.
