List of Thriller sub genres- what inspires me and why

Thriller films aren't just the typical bloody gruesome film we all mix up with Horror films. Thriller films cover a range of different sub genres.

Some cross genres Thriller films cover are:
Action thriller
Supernatural thriller
horror thriller
pyschological thriller
political thriller

The thriller film that inspires me at the moment would be a pyschological thriller this being because I enjoy the mystery mind tackling side of things the anticipation satisfies me and allows the forboding atmosphere to tackle the crescendo.

List of Thriller sub-genres

Thriller sub-genres.

  • Action (An example of an action thriller would be Panic room) which tells the story of intruders invading a family home and the only safe escape is the Panic room.

  • Psychological

  • Political

  • Supernatural

  • Sci-fi

  • Spy (An example of a spy thriller would be Taken) this tells the story of a man embarking on an emotional journey in an attempt to find his daughter who is abducted by trafficers.

The type of thriller that inspires me the most is psychological thrillers as they often require deep thinking and in order to unravell the plot you often have to look beneath the surface. Additionally they tend tend to have interesting twists at the ending of the film that are usually not of the initial expectations of the viewer. Moreover I find that psychological thrillers are generally better at maintaining suspense throughout the film

A primary example of a psychological thriller would be orpahan, which tells the story of a troubled girl who's an orphan and is adopted by a suburban family. The troubled girl completes unjustified grusome acts in an attempt to isolate her adopted mother due to her innapropriate feelings of a sexual nature towards her father.

As it stands much of our film mirrors Orphan as it's where the route of our inspiration originated from. We took the idea of the young and troubled sociopathic girl and used this in our opening sequence as we thought it would create a chilling effect within the audience and as the film was so popular amongst the audience we aimed to target we felt that it would be a successful idea in that area alone.

How is suspense created in 'United 93'

There are a number of factors which account for suspense in the film 'United 93'. The voice over at the really begin of the film of a mysterious language which was powered by a male deep voice, which was backed up with a slow airy tune this made me curious about where the film was heading as I was unfamiliar with this language, I really couldn't understand what he was saying and the music sounded sinister giving a sense of uncertainty of what's going to happen next.

This film which I watched in class had created suspenseful moments which were maintained throughout and had me on the edge of my seat. Not knowing what can happen next really made me wonder of different outcomes and it had me anxious to know what was going to happen to the passengers. Something that made the film's suspense build up at the begin when we wasn't really being thrilled was the sense of normality established at the airport, people where on their phones, talking and laughing with each other, all this indicated to me that nothing out of the ordinary was going to happen and when it did happen it came as some what a surprise, the use of close ups on the terrorists faces suggest that they were feeling impatient and they felt
nervous, this implied to me that they were up to something and from then on some suspenseful moment would be up coming. The terrorists are also were praying as if we say what they was planing to do was all right, normally this would suggest that they were good people knowing that they were Muslim as well its expended to be people of peace and harmony but then again seeing what they've planned to do to the plain was a major contrast to what Muslims are about.

What I believe created a lot of suspense in the film was the music and sounds. They used high pitch noises to make a dramatic effect of minor things. The music was rather like an indication of something bad to come each time we saw a moment of suspense or thriller it was accompanied with a high pitch instrumental.

Thriller sub genres .

  • Drama
  • Erotic

  • Medical
  • Political
  • Psychological
  • Spy
  • Religious
The type of thriller that inspires me is a psychological thriller. This is because they keep me on the edge of my seat and require me to be actively involved throughout the whole movie. Psychological thrillers often have an unexpected twist at the end which is why they inspire me so much as they are not the simplistic ordinary endings that most films have. An example of this type of thriller is Deja Vu. This is a successful psychological thriller as it manages to maintain suspense throughout by not indicating what is going to happen next.

This image represents the feeling of paranoia. The image shows myself captioned in front of the mirror looking extremely paranoid about what may be behind me. The image may also integrate the feelings of fear and depression as constant paranoia may cause this effect. The camera shot portraying my hands grasped around my face is showing the strain I'm feeling the constant anticipation building though the forboding atmosphere. Using a location with the mirror is a good way or portraying the front shot and back shot of a character that way you may also be able to define the characters specific body language.

Claustrophobic

The picture represents claustrophobia as it shows two people closely packed together in a closing elevator which suggest that they are going to be closed in the tight space of the lift . The picture also displays fear, anxiety and desperation to escape from the closing doors.

"City"
This picture demonstrates city life as it captures the essence of a fast pace environment by means of a long shot which focuses on us playing the role of citizens on our daily commutes. The long shot also allows for the incorporation of traffic and passers by. There is a close up established on the road sign which is the main focal point of the picture of which names other surrounding infamous areas. This helps to give the image quite an eccentric typical london feel. We tried to be as natural as possible by showing expressions of happiness and not over posing.

This picture was taken to try and illustrate 'Paranoia', the person is feeling Paranoid about her surrounding, as she looks deep into the mirror she keeps an eye out for what is behind her. Particularly in this image the person looks somewhat stressed and seems to be going through depression. This type of image including the front and back of the character, using a mirror shows her body language and we see her facial expressions which helps us discover the title of the image.

How is suspense created in a film you watched in class?

Collateral is an action based thiriller which incorporates many subtleties in order to create and maintain suspense. The opening clip is set in an airport which establishes a close up of Tom Cruise's face signifying that he is the main focus. The diagetic sound of the hubub of ambient background noise and different sounding footsteps is also incorporated. Tom cruise has footsteps of a slow pace as he walks through the airport in his suit and tinted shades indicating his importance and also showing that he is mellow and cool, however the oppoising footsteeps are fast paced telling us he is nervous and thus showing binary oppositions. The footsteps are also accompnied by a non diagetic sound of a fast pace modern score with a drum beat, which creates suspense as it indicates to the audience that something is going to happen. When the two men come into contact there is a match cut with the bag swap which creates suspense as the audience are left wondering what the bags contain and whether or not they were swapped intentionally. An over the shoulder shot of Tom Cruise is used at this point which allows us to see through his perspective.

I enjoyed the opening of this film, I especially liked the fact that there were no tittles I found this quite effective as it kind of leads to an element of mystery and makes the audience wonder what its all about. However I think that the plot was delivered to early on in the film and it kind of makes it abit tooProxy-Connection: keep-alive
Cache-Control: max-age=0

bvious what the central idea of the film surrounds.

How is supense created in unit 93?

A number of factors contribute to the build up of suspense in unit 93. Initially the film begins with a diagetic sound of a voice over of a foreign language which sounds like some form of a prayer being recited. This is merged with the sound of a heavy droned non diagetic sound which contributes to establishing quite a sinister and sombre mood. Thus putting the viewer on edge and creating suspense as we are aware something bad is going to happen. Prior to boarding the plane everyone is smiling and happy in order to establish a sense of normality this arouses suspense as the audience are waiting for that key moment of disruption to occur. However whilst everybodyelse is cheery the terrorists in question appear on edge and thus creating an unerving atmosphere.

Whilst on the flight a close up of the locking of the door takes place, serving as an important moment as it signifys its importance by emphasing the fact that there is no escape. Furthermore none of the passengers seem interested in the safety instructions being given as nobody suspects that they will need to use them which is ironic as a planned attack was being slowly put into motion.

Panic slowly arises as the authorites realise that the flight is unable to be copied, inidcating some form of technological failure. This creates suspense as it is the moment of disruption that we'd been slowly waiting for. Up untill this point a fairly normal atmosphere had been created however now it appeared obvious that the passengers could be in great danger. Additionnaly the authorities are than made aware of a possible highjacking situation due to suspcious transmission and this in turn creates panic across all boards. This creates suspense as the audience become more aware that the highjacking is going to take place. This made me feel slightly sad in a way and really made me wonder to what extent the circumstances could have been reversed.

This panic is folllowed by a long delay which put the terrorists on edge creating suspense as the passengers are still unaware of whats going on and that their lives are in grave danger.

By the use of mise en scene by using a tape player it creates suspense as it is rewinded we are able to tell that more then one plane is going to be highjacked, this evoked sad emotions and made me feel quite dismal as it made me reflect on how many people lost their lives.

Before the terrorists attempt to highjack the plane one of them says a prayer which makes us realise that they are ready to make their move.

When the terrorists take over the plane and the passengers fight with them to try and regain control it creates suspense as for a moment the audience wonder if the situation is going to be reversed. However when the plane hit the ground reality sank in and a sombre mood rushed through me.

I was inspired by this film as I felt that the recall of events was very accurate and the way that the plot was devised allowed for the build up of suspense to take place by slowly drawing the audience in opposed to feeding it to us all at once.

Definition of suspense

Suspense can be defined as the build up of anticipation via the use of sound and camera editing to create and maintain tension within the viewer. This build up of tension in turn usually leads to a climax where in which a dramatic and eventful moment occurs.

AS media skills audit - editing

As an introduction to the editing process using the programme of 'final cut pro' we were able to learn how to edit a short clip.
Using our editing knowledge we were able to incorporate points in and out to establish where our chosen clips should begin and end.
Additionally we dragged the clips onto the bait time line. In order to improve our editing skills we learnt how to use a new tool this being 'Razor tool' which enabled us to shorten clips. The whole editing experience enabled us to build up skills and improve existing skills.

As Media skills audit-Editing

We constructed sequence designs using a program called final cut pro where in which we edited a film called bait. Initially we opened up a clip from the browser and incorporated in and out points to establish where in which the desired clips should begin and end. Additionally we dragged the clips onto the timeline and learned how to use a tool called the "razor tool" which allowed for the shortening of intended clips. This contributed to us being able to gain a feel for using the program and leaning how to build and construct sequences.

As Media Skills Audit-Editing

Today we was using a program called 'Final Cut Pro' this allows you to edit clips. We started by editing a movie called 'Bait' this was our tutorial of 'Final Cut Pro'. First i uploaded the clip
onto the viewer, once this clips on the viewer i can press 'I' and 'O' this is for in and out s
tage of the clip were i want it edit the clip to start and finish. After this process of the editing I dragged the clip onto the time line. By now i knew how to use the Razor tool to shorten clips, editing out bits that were not useful to me and to create different types of shots. On
ce i had my sequence together i then was able to watch it on the Canvas.

Final Cut pro

Using the Final Cut Pro program I edited a movie called Bait using the tutorial.
The first thing I did was open a clip in the browser and placed it in the viewer.By pressing 'I' and 'O' I created in and out points.
After this i dragged them on to the timeline. I learnt how to use the razor tool to shorten clips, however i didn't use it in my finished sequence.
When my sequence was finished I was able to watch it in the Canvas.

Deja Vu is an action packed thriller which tells the story of one man's journey back in time to save a womans life. The opening sequence is full of suspense and lets the audience know that something bad is going to happen.
Normality is established at the beginning with cheerful band music, people laughing etc, however the slow motion shots and camera shots from high and wide shot angles suggest that they are being wathced. The white boxes around the titles also suggest this as they look like targets, indicating that the people on the boat are somebodies target. The way the boxes disappear also create suspense, e.g. when a wave washes one away it indicates that whoever is wastching is undercover.
When the little girl drops her doll, our eyes play tricks on us as we automatically think that it was a real baby. This builds suspense as we are uncertain ifd the baby is real and wether the little girl is going to jump after it.
The doll hitting the water is dramatized by amplified sounds of waves and a slow motion shot.
The two shots of the passengers and the car park causes suspense as there is a dramatic change in music. The music upstairs is cheerful, happy and loud but the music downstairs is slow airy and very quiet. This causes suspense as the audience know that the music downstairs is diegetic but they do not know where it is coming from. The slow music also suggests that things are slowing down and they are coming to an end.

How is suspense created in the film you watched in class?

The film we watched in class was United 93. The film managed to create and maintain suspense througout, keeping it's audience's on the edge of their seats.
The film began with a deep male voice speaking in a foriegn language accompanied by slow airy music. This built suspense as we, as the audience couldn't understand what he was saying and the music sounded sinister giving a sense of uncertainty. Additionally, the voices heard were not accompanied by faces which meant that the suspense already created was heightend as we could not identify who the voice belonged to.
A sense of normality is establised in the airport. People on the phones, talking and laughing with eachother all indicate that nothing out of the ordinary was going to happen, however the use of close ups on the terrorists faces suggest that they were feeling uneasy and impatient, implying that they were up to something. The terrorists are also praying. Normally, this would suggest that they were pure, spiritual, peaceful people, but the accompanied music tells the audience otherwise.

These scene creates suspense mainly through the use of music as the shots are all of normal things in life.
Before the plane takes off a close up of the plane door is shot, creating suspense and tension as the amplified sound detail of the door locking, close up and long length focus suggest that no one is getting out.

When the flight has finally taken off ther is suspicion of other planes being hi jacked in the air control stations. This creates suspense as we cannot see what is actually happening on the other planes and therfore uncertainty is established as we are unsure wether or not the planes have been hi jacked. Suspense is also built in this scene as the workers react very casually to the scenerio and don't seem to believe that the other planes have been hi jacked. This builds tension as the workers are not doing anything about the situation and they have no sense of urgency even though there is a possibility of peoples lives being at risk.

When we see the planes crash into the Twin Towers, suspense is heigtened rapidly as we are not certain if the plane was United 93.
Finally, towards the end of the film when we are certain something dreadful is about to happen suspense and tension are at their highest. All of the action engages the audience as they are eager to find out what is goin to happen next. A rush of excitment also takes place when we see that the passengers are being successful with their plan to take over the plane, however this is sharply cut when the screen blacks out suggesting the plane had crashed and the plan had failed.

Altough some may say that this film is dragged out and is longer than it it needed to be, in my view i think that United93 is a very detailed account of the actual event. It also keeps it's audience on the edge of their seats by blatently suggesting what is going to happen, but not giving any clues as to when.

How is suspense created in the film you watched in class ?

In the film Jaws suspense is created by the different use of shots and the impact of sound.
Fast camera shots created tension as the level of uncertainty is used here as we cannot adjust to what is happening. As an audience we are able to use our eyes to be drawn in to what is happening our attention followed the screen as the shot of the shark became closer. The music used here an established piece of music is used to create a forboding atmosphere. The music used here keeps the audience drawn as the slow tempo follows the same pace as the shark gliding in the water putting the audiences main focus on the shark. You don't want your attention to leave as you don't want to miss the final outcome. The crescendo built is built on slow pace of slow camera shots integrated with the slow forboding music .
